"Were the preformances not so devout, there would be something eerie about the technical perfections of the singing. Bravo!"

    International Record Review March 08

"A most beguiling collection of works commissioned by this superb choir...The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus sing with polish and a full, well balanced tone throughout, caught in splendid sound"
    Gramophone June 08

"This Requiem is a lovely, thoughtful and eminently approachable piece. I should imagine that it’s quite demanding to sing, not least in terms of sustaining the lines and keeping the pitch. Suffice to say that the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus sounds to be fully equal to the task."
    Music Webb April 08

The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus is one of the leading vocal ensembles in the US. Since its formation it has regularly commissioned new choral works from both young and well-established composers.

This recording features four recent commissions with attractive and approachable works from distinguished American composer, Ned Rorem, one of the UK’s leading writers for voices, Judith Bingham, the Chamber Chorus’s 2006-7 Composer-in-residence, New Zealander Clare Maclean and the critically-acclaimed large-scale Requiem from UK composer, Sasha Johnson Manning.

Ode to Man Ned Rorem (6:59)

os anthos chortou Clare Maclean (3:27)

The Shepheardes Calender Judith Bingham (11:47)

    Requiem Sasha Johnson Manning (39:13)

    Total playing time: 61:26

THE St Louis Chamber Chorus is one of the best of many small vocal ensembles in the United States and has close links with this country being conducted by Old
Mancunian Philip Barnes (and having been founded by Britisher Ronald Arnatt).

It also has a long-standing relationship with Manchester composer Sasha Johnson Manning, and thechief attraction of this collection of a cappella works is in the full premiere recording of her Requiem, which surrounds settings of Psalm 30 and
other poems with words from the traditional latin requiem mass.

It's a remarkable composition, taking the listener on a journey through a range of thoughts and emotions - the central movements can be sung independently - but
unified by a final Lux Aeterna which recalls the opening. The inner movements include settings of Oscar Wilde, St John of the Cross and Walt Whitman's Toward
    The Unknown Region.

Judith Bingham's piece sets three lyrics, two by Spenser and one an old version of Psalm 23: it is demanding but highly imaginative music.
