The third recording from La Maîtrise de Toulouse on the Regent label features an inspirational survey of French Christmas music from the sixteenth to twenty-first centuries. This is the first recording employing the full mixed choir with its newly-formed tenor and bass sections, though the programme also contains several works for upper voices.

Reviews

‘…an irresistible Gallic Christmas programme,…With beautifully blended and precisely pitched singing, the group excels in Poulenc’s Four Christmas Motets, Roger-Ducasse’s Chant de lat Nativité and a challenging Marc Bleuse commission.’ The Sunday Times

‘La Maitrise de Toulouse is the mixed-voice children s choir of the Toulouse  Conservatoire, and has recently added tenor and bass sections. The results are highly impressive in this delectable programme of French Christmas music. In an opening sequence of motets from the medieval period, those of Bouzignac stand out particularly, gem-like miniatures featuring translucent solo work from various sopranos. In the modern section, Poulencs Quatre Motets gain extra vibrancy from having young voices sing them, as does a group of traditional noels. An utter pleasure.’ BBC Music

5 tuning forks rating in Diapason magazine

‘Révélation du paysage maîtrisien de ces dernières années, la Maîtrise de Toulouse célèbre un « Noël français » avec chef et label anglais. Entente (très) cordiale qui donne des motets de Mouton, Bouzignac, Moulinié, Clérambault et Charpentier admirablement animés, au style et à la prononciation surveillés.’ Diapason
‘TThe Noels are delightful, and I’m quite taken with the Poulenc, which is laid out sumptuously and elegantly by  he young singers…If you’ve never heard Bouzignac’s ‘Stella Refulget’, here’s your chance. It’s gorgeous, and the young singers do pretty well with it.’ American Record Guide
This is magnificent choral singing, and the stylistic range is refreshingly wide…Beautiful, immediate recorded sound too, the resonance never clouding the detail.’
