Description

A new recording of the extraordinary ‘Mass for Double Choir’ of 1922–6 by the Swiss composer, Frank Martin, and the first using the new Urtext edition – a work that remained unperformed for nearly forty years after its composition it is now recognised as one of the major Latin choral Mass settings of the twentieth century. Infused with echoes of plainchant, it exploits the resources of two a capella choirs, with the full gamut of choral textures ranging from the austerity of the Kyrie, the richness of the Gloria, the breathtaking virtuosity of the Credo, the brilliance of the Sanctus, to the sublime beauty of the ending of the Agnus Dei. The Martin is coupled with Maurice Duruflé’s universally-loved ‘Requiem’ – the first recording by a French children’s choir, and featuring mezzo-soprano Juliette May, a former member of the Maîtrise, and Alain Buet, one of France’s most distinguished operatic baritones, as the two vocal soloists.

Reviews

‘‘…commendable clarity, musicality and expressive enthusiasm from the complexities of the Credo through to that sublime Angus Dei.” Andrew McGregor, BBC Radio 3 Record Review

‘Attention to detail is exemplary, tuning immaculate, and their fresh, youthful sound is immensely appealing’ ★★★★★ Choir and Organ May 2023

‘It is astounding that a young choir can perform with so much emotional, depth and energy, a testament to Mark Opstad’s exceptional choir training techniques. One of the finest releases so far this year. ’ @Chimeoarts February 2023

‘This young choir sings amazingly well. Both works on this CD require seasoned singers, but these young ladies and gentlemen refute that opinion with great ease. And how the individual quality shines even more when the various parties sign about the resurrection fo Christ in the Creed. How sparklingly the resurrection is sung about… this recording tells me that a new generation is coming that has taken over the torch of classical music from previous generations and carries it further into the future. ’ ★★★★★ Orgelnieuws February 2023 (excerpt translated by Google translate)

‘The listener is quickly bewitched by the clarity of the singing of the Maîtrise de Toulouse, the freshness of its voices and the balance that is established within a universe served with modest fervor.’ Crescendo Magazine (Belgium) April 2023

‘It shows a young choir (students at the Toulouse Conservatoire) at the peak of their powers with beautiful blend, clear lines and excellent diction. Opstad gives the harmonic dissonances a spine-tingling glow. The performers give their all in the Gloria, with outstanding energy.’ Church Music Quarterly June 2023

‘This is an exceptionally fine recording with good choral singing under a masterly leader.’ Sydney Organ Journal Autumn 2023
