Description

The fifth disc from Regent entirely devoted to the compositions of David Bednall, and the first recording of his solo organ works, played by Paul Walton on the organ of Blackburn Cathedral.

The works on this recording span David Bednall’s compositional career to date. The Adagio was one of his earliest pieces, and Triptych in Honour of Herbert Howells is a major new work especially written for this recording.

Two of the releases of his music on Regent have been Editor’s Choice in Gramophone, most recently Stabat Mater in the 2016 Awards issue.

Recognized as one of the leading composers of his generation David Bednall studied for a PhD in composition with Professor John Pickard at the University of Bristol. He is Organist of The University of Bristol, Sub Organist at Bristol Cathedral and conducts The University Singers. He was Organ Scholar at The Queen’s College, Oxford, studied with Dr Naji Hakim and David Briggs and was Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral.

This new recording of Bednall’s solo organ music is played on the magnficent Walker organ of Blackburn Cathedral by the brilliant young organist, Paul Walton, in his fourth solo disc for Regent. Paul Walton studied in Manchester with Matthew Owens and Margaret Phillips, and subsequently with Kevin Bowyer. Since 2001 he has been Assistant Organist of Bristol Cathedral.

Reviews

‘… thrilling, richly layered music. Paul Walton does him [Bednall] proud on Blackburn Cathedral’s Walker instrument.’
**** BBC Music January 2018

‘I look forward to hearing more from Bednall. This is one of the outstanding organ recordings of the past year.’
American Record Guide May 2018

‘On this first recording of David Bednall’ s organ works. Paul Walton ‘revels’ in the variety of the repertoire, from ‘boisterous’ toccatas to sublime meditations’. This CD is a perfect opportunity to explore the English and French influences on this composer…The Blackburn Cathedral organ is the perfect vehicle for this mélange and, in the hands of Paul Walton and recording engineer Gary Cole, Bednall’s music really sings and dances.  ’ ***** STAR REVIEW Choir and Organ Jan/Feb 2018

‘This is music that Paul Walton obviously loves, and his playing is wonderfully assured – the music sings and dances by turns. He is splendidly partnered by the great organ of Blackburn Cathedral, and Gary Cole has worked his usual magic with the recording. Altogether a really fine disc.’  ***** Organists’ Review March 2018

‘Bednall’s music is magnificently served by scintillating and perceptive performances and vivid sound….bursting its seams with surges of exuberant festivity….Bednall’s rich, romantically-infused harmonic vocabulary…brilliantly played by Paul Walton on one of the more arresting English cathedral organs of our time.’  MusicWeb February 2018

The title translates as “Play with a loud voice and the greatest joy” and it does, as they say, what it says on the tin. ’  Crossrhthms January 2018
