Description

An extraordinary collection of extraordinarily virtuoso British and American works for organ from the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, played by one of the world’s foremost exponents of contemporary organ music, Tom Bell. The recording takes its title ‘Freak out’ from one of the performance instructions in William Bolcom’s unique work for organ, percussion (including kit), and electronic tape ‘Black Host’. This instruction, together with others, including ‘Go Ape’, and ‘Detonate’, are words not usually found in the world of organ music!

Reviews

2022 Critic’s Choice: American Record Guide

‘Bell plays this extraordinary program with complete understanding and identification with the music, coupled with a total grasp of the huge technical demands.’ American Record Guide Jan/Feb 2022

‘Bell puts the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook’s mighty chapel organ through its paces with a programme of 20th- and 21st-century works designed to showcase what it can do. This is in equal parts brilliant and a bit bonkers. Bolcom’s Black Host is not for the faint-hearted.’ ★★★ BBC Music Magazine December 2021

‘relishably raucous recital… Bell’s theatrically chiaroscuro advocacy throughout is sure-footed, the romantic voice of a 1933 Hill, Norman 8c Beard satisfyingly eloquent, with muscle and power aplenty in such thunderously modern music. ’ ★★★★ Choir & Organ November 2021

‘…the recording is a sheer joy to listen to end-to-end. And boy, can that Holbrook behemoth growl… Treat your friends to this CD for Christmas.’ Graeme Kay, Choir & Organ December 2021

‘The organ and a very resonant Chapel feature prominently in the overall sound qualities of the music by two American and five British composers, all played with considerable élan by the magnificent Tom Bell… The subtitle of the CD is ‘Extraordinary Music for Organ’ – Oh yes, definitely!’ British Music Society

‘Get this recording, listen to it, freak out, go ape, …’ The American Organist February 2023
