This recording is a personal collection selected by the composer, representing a number of favourite compositions written over the last sixty years, many of which have never been recorded before. A wide range of styles are included, from a simple two-part carol written for a school choir, to demanding a cappella works.

Richard Lloyd (1933–2021) was born in Cheshire. He was successively assistant organist at Salisbury Cathedral, organist at Hereford, and Durham Cathedrals. His extensive body of choral compositions is a joy sing and hear, and his works have established themselves in the regular repertoire of many cathedral and parish church choirs.

Those who sang under Richard Lloyd’s direction grew up on a healthy diet of the best of centuries of church music stretching back to Tallis and Byrd, through Wesley, Wood and Stanford to Bairstow, Darke, and of course Herbert Howells and these great influences have shaped his own compositions.

The Bede Singers was formed in 2005. The musicians are former members of Durham Cathedral Choir, augmented by a number of other professional singers. They are directed by internationally-renowned conductor, David Hill, who was assistant to Richard Lloyd at Durham Cathedral.

‘The music of Richard Lloyd comes right out of the Anglican tradition, and is flowing, tonal and romantic. If it does not break new ground, it develops this idiom naturally. Of note is the Magnificat setting, and ‘Open My Heart, Illumine me’’  American Record Guide November 2015

‘This CD is a delight. It is the second recorded collection of Richard Lloyd’s music and includes works as widely divided as 1954 and 2014. All have similar characteristics, soaring melodies, harmonies with unexpected turns, singable and enjoyable parts for all the singers and perhaps most of all, a sure sense of how to use the music to enhance the words…The singing, of course, is excellent. The Bede Singers, formed in 2005, consist of former members of Durham Cathedral Choir and some professional singers; the direction is in the sure hands of David Hill, who produces idiomatic and impeccable performances of all the works. The organ accompaniments are supportive and well balanced with the singers. Altogether a most enjoyable disc: highly recommended.‘ Organists’ Review December 15

‘I enjoyed all of this music very much indeed. My enjoyment was enhanced considerably by the splendid performances. Indeed, I find it hard to imagine that Richard Lloyd’s music could receive finer advocacy. The choir is consistently excellent and the singers sound really engaged with the music. The work of Ian Shaw and Daniel Hyde at the organ is first class. Gary Cole’s engineering presents the performers in very good sound. The composer himself has contributed succinct notes on each piece.’  MusicWeb October 2015
